The narrative of Violet Sorrengail, a young lady who overcomes all obstacles to become a dragon rider on a futuristic planet, is carried on in this book. Below is a quick synopsis of the book’s key ideas:

The novel continues where Fourth Wing, the first book, left off. Violet has made it through the gruelling Threshing, a set of exams that saw the majority of her Basgiath War College colleagues perish. In addition, she has learned a secret that could alter the course of the galaxy: she is the heir apparent to the Empyrean throne. She is not yet safe, though. She still needs to go through the second year of training, which is crueller and more difficult than the first.

Vice Commandant Riorson, a new adversary in the novel, is out to shatter Violet and force her to submit to his power. In addition, he knows who she really is, and he intends to turn that knowledge against her. He seeks to turn her against her friends and supporters, particularly Xaden, her dragon partner and lover, by torturing her physically and psychologically. In addition, he makes threats to make her secret public, which would start a civil war.

The history and mythology of the dragon riders and the Empyreans are further expanded upon in this book. Violet discovers that she is the predicted saviour who will bring harmony and balance back to the galaxy, in addition to being the heir apparent to the kingdom. She also learns that Basgiath War College is home to a number of old mysteries and secrets, including a doorway to a different world through which she meets an enigmatic figure claiming to be her ancestor.

The conflict between Violet and Riorson, who unleashes his ultimate weapon—a rogue dragon capable of destroying all in its path — marks the book’s final moment. To defend her friends and loved ones, Violet must muster all of her bravery and fighting talents. She must also decide whether to expose her actual self to the public or to keep it a secret in order to maintain peace. This is a difficult decision.
